An expert in only committing to the bare minumum effort, Elena has somehow managed to become a DD *and* host an XMPP server for her friends and family for, apparently, more than 8 years.

Accepted Talks:

Federated instant messaging, 100% debianized

Getting away from centralized services is now more important than ever; thanks to prosody or ejabberd and a number of clients for all tastes, it is easy to community-host your own federated XMPP server and chat away in a secure and federated way while only using software that is packaged for Debian. And if you are a Debian Developer, there is also already a community doing the hosting for you.

In this talk I’ll give an overview of what XMPP is, why it is a suitable solution to the IM needs of today, and how it’s better than some alternatives, and then provide a few pointers on what to do to join it, either by self/community hosting themselves or by joining an existing server, including a short update on Debian’s own instance.
