Debian install workshop
Description
The idea is to organize a workshop where Debian contributors and users assist locals in installing Debian on their machines (against the backdrop of Windows 10 support ending in this October) as part of the Debian-endorsed End of 10 campaign.
Open questions
There are still quite a few things to settle/organize before this workshop can become a success:
-
Location: Do we do the workshop at the DebConf campus? Pros: Close to other DebConf events. Cons: Further from Brest city center. Alternatives: Local hackerspace? Infini? UPDATE 2025-06-24: Given that DebConf requires registration from all attendees on the campus by 2025-06-29, the workshop will have to happen outside of it. Infini has offered their offices in Brest to host the workshop. They will need a date and time from us, so they can plan accordingly. I suggest to do it on Friday, the 18th in the evening so we a) have more time to spread the news and b) have a good chance that people have time. What do you think?

French-speaking volunteers: While I am willing to support in organizing such an event, I would not undertake this without French-speaking Debian volunteers. Please get in touch with me if you are willing to help and speak French. UPDATE 2025-06-24: I’ve created a repo to centralize the information around this event. Please add yourselves as volunteers in
volunteers.md
, if you’re willing to help out. Please note whether you are French-speaking or not! -
Liability waiver: For similar events I have written this liability waiver which we could use as a template. It would need to be adapted to Debian and then translated into French. UPDATE 2025-06-24: I’ve adapted the waiver template to Debian’s case. However, so far it is only in English. We need a translation into French for it. Same goes for the information in the README.

Post DebConf support: Installing Debian is only a first step. Newcomers will in all likelihood need support after DebConf and I’d like to provide them with local support options. Create dedicated DebianUsersInBrest wiki page? Or just use existing French wiki page and leverage the debian-user-french mailing list? Refer to local hackerspace? UPDATE 2025-06-24: Infini has pointed out to me that they help people with various computing related tasks, incl. Linux installations/support. With the local Debian community and Infini support, I think we’re in the clear and don’t leave newcomers to Debian hanging without support.

If we decide to do this, I’m happy to register the event on the End of 10 website.
