During DebCamp, from Thursday to Saturday at 10:00 and Sunday at 3:30, meet us at the noisy hacklab, and if needed, we’ll relocate to another space. We’ll have ~90-minute sessions for newcomers to receive basic instructions on topics that will help them become familiar with Debian and DebConf.
Some of the topics in the menu:
- Installing and using Debian: how to install Debian, run live images, use virtual machines, understanding architectures, Debian suites, available window managers, etc.
- Packaging for Debian: learn the basics of Debian packaging and fill your first ITP (even better if you don’t know what ITP is about!).
- Encryption in Debian: how encryption is used in Debian, gpg basics, creating your first gpg key, etc.
- Communication channels: mailing lists, IRC channels, Debian Social, Matrix bridges, Debian planet, Wiki, Bits.d.o, creating your accounts.
- New contributor guidance: Getting listed in contributors.debian.org, understanding terms like DM/DD-upl/DD-non-upl and the New Member process.
- Learn how to use mentors.debian.net: getting your packages into Debian
- Managing bugs in Debian: Debian BTS and Salsa
We will conduct discussion sessions based on interest and the availability of volunteers to guide the subjects. Come along to help and/or to learn! And of course, participants would be encouraged to bring their own topics of interest.
During Debconf days, mentorship can still happen in a more informal way, in smaller groups. Please contact Tassia, Tiago or Praveen if you have questions, or any particular request.
