Brest

Pont de Recouvrance/Recouvrance Bridge, Brest

Brest has one of the world’s finest natural harbours, located in the extremity of the western peninsula of France. For most of its history, Brest has been defined by its maritime activity, with the presence of a major French naval base, and internationally renowned shipyards capable of the most sophisticated repairs on the world’s largest vessels. This long maritime heritage is reflected in Brest’s bustling port, its museums, the many events celebrating its history, and its vertical-lift bridge, one of the few in the world featuring tramway tracks.

Brest also hosts international festivals, such as the Brest International Maritime Festival, and the Brest European Short Film Festival, attracting people from all over Europe and the world. With its strong ties to oceanography, Brest is home to a wide range of research institutions, such as Ifremer (French National Institute for Ocean Sciences and Technologies), the Shom (Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service), and Océanopolis (scientific cultural centre dedicated to the ocean).

Brest is the third most populated city in Brittany, which is a pioneering centre of research and innovation in computer science, telecommunications, and cybersecurity, encompassing major academic institutions and industrial organizations in these fields.

Brest is a place where community, nature, and technology research converge harmoniously, offering a unique environment that blends human ingenuity with a breathtaking coastline and cutting-edge technical innovation.
